George – you are right on target here. Small business owners spend their time ON their business and don’t have the time to learn how to optimize their website, if they have one. Further, they know that print advertising is not working for them as it used to, and they also know their prospective customers are online. Small business owners ALL have marketing budgets. They gladly will shift some of their marketing dollars to pay someone to make their business visible online and therefore more competitive and thus more profitable. Hi George, Thank you for this video, I have been putting my efforts into this for a while now, and you have confirmed what I have been thinking. I have been doing a lot of work learning S.E.O. and I have got quite good at it. The problem that I have is that I live on a small island called Tenerife, which I love, but there is not much in the way of business here, so I am targeting the U.K., but having to do it by phone and email, I am finding that it is difficult to get business owners to understand what I am doing, they say things like “we have our own people working on this”, and I know that they don´t know what they are doing. I am going to stick to it, but I wondered if you had any thoughts on how to improve my conversion rate, as people don´t even want to talk about it.

Don’t be afraid to propose shop owners. The big question is how you going to convince them. You see in real (physical) businesses, shop owners already have money, they already have stable income from regular customers, they already have distributor business accounts with major companies, they already have 30-days approve credits. If in our so-high-tech world shop or other physical business owners don’t have Web-sites is obviously for 2 reasons: they either haven’t been convinced yet in correct way to have one OR they so stubbornly sure that they don’t need one. If you lend on First Category, you need propose something better than just “hey, for 600 bucks a month I will drive customers to your shop”. In physical business there is no “60-days refund policy” or “excuse me but server was down for past week so I was unable to drive customers to your shop”. In physical business every cents is count, because shop owners pay monthly rent, shop bills, workers, business loans, phone bills, plus catalogues, advertise fliers, business cards, and if you show them that for 600 bucks you will do better than catalogues and fliers than you will be hired. The Sir from video he probably have battalion of accountants who spending his money with 10x profit. For Second Category, hmmm, where to start…Well they probably afraid of anything that has to do with PC and IT, they probably have outdated phone models and Blackberry’s is like aliens for them. For second category just start by going to those shops, buy few inexpensive things, say hi to owner, get him to know that you’re regular and in return he will start trust you, and than slowly explain what you do and how many shop owners you help so far to get more customers. Some times ago I wasn’t convinced in correct way, I was literally “attacked” by 2 guys in Black suits who told me that for XXX bucks a month they will make my business bloom but never told me how they going to do that. And as an owner I want to know where I’m going to spend my money, because this is just how it works in real physical business. At the same time I knew that I could make much-much better by going into Virtual world and promoting my business but I didn’t have correct person do it for me. That how I lend on Google Sniper, and as a physical business owner I can tell you that I’ve builded many WP web-sites and each promoting my physical store by promoting different kind products from my store. For example site X targeted for promoting product X from my shop, site Z targeted promoting product Z from my shop and etc…
Conclusions: George’s advice will work if you’re really serious about promoting physical shops on long term basis, because if you’re not serious, shop owners will start talk to each other and you going to loose your reputation. Imagine what is like to loose trust in your own town :)

This is an interesting idea, one that I’ve seen others talk about. I didn’t really give it much thought before, but it’s something that I may have to check into.
It seems that ranking for local businesses would probably be the easy part. Convincing the business owner that they can benefit from it may be the biggest challenge if they aren’t aware of how much it could help their business.
